LIGHTING A ROOM FROM THE FURNITURE OUT

Lighting, at its core, helps us see when navigating a room or puts a focus on something important

Using accent lighting to illuminate inside alcoves, under cabinets, beneath furniture, behind screens or displays, and underneath steps can add visual interest to a space. You can light a room from the furniture out with a more low-light effect that is gentler on the eyes.

The most common (and easiest to install) type of light for backlighting is LED tape light, but under-cabinet lights and certain downlights can be suitable options as well.

Here are a few tips:

Layer lighting all around the space. To make a space comfortable and well lit, it’s important to place lights in several key areas around a room to eliminate dark corners or to highlight focus areas.

Customize your controls

Dimmers, remote switches, timers, motion detectors, and other controls can improve lighting not just by providing lighting options, but also by providing more comfort, ease of use, and automation for those options.

Focus the light on what’s important

The key to good lighting isn’t how bright the space is, but how much contrast there is between the things you want to be looking at and all the other things in the room. In a living room you may want to see the art on the wall, the books in your hand, and the objects on your shelves. In a kitchen, it’s important to see the entire counter space, but you don’t need a lot of light in the walkways. Get light where it matters most.
