Determine the type of cabinet: framed or frameless
1. Framed:
Standard overlay 1.27 cm (1/2") (thickness of frame covered by the door)
Thus, order a door that is 2.54 cm (1") larger and 2.54 cm (1") higher than the opening.
2. Frameless:
Measured like a framed cabinet or using the existing door's measurements.
You must determine the overlays and choose the type of HINGES you will use.
Here are the standards sizes for overlay hinges for framed cabinets:
1.27 cm (1/2"), 3.17 cm (1-1/4").
* A standard overlay is 1.27 cm (1/2"), whereas framed full overlay is 3.17 cm (1-1/4").
Frameless cabinets, often called "full overlay" or "European style cabinets", generally have a thickness of 5/8" or 3/4". These frameless cabinets do not have a frame, the hinges are installed on the inner sidewall of the cabinet.
For cabinets with a thickness of 1.58 cm (5/8"), use a 1/2" overlay hinge (add 1" in width and height). For a 3/4" cabinet, use a 1.58 cm (5/8") overlay hinge (add 3.17 cm (1-1/4") in width and height).
Always measure width by height. Order forms are usually printed in this format.
