Stages represent the number of tubes that make up a single leg on a height adjustable base.
A two-stage base leg is made up of two tubes one inside the other. The inside tube telescopes in and out of the outer tube to make the height adjustment.
A three-stage base leg is made of three tubes each inside the other. The two internal tubes telescope in and out of the outer tube to make the height adjustment.
Three-stage bases tend have a larger adjustment range than two-stage bases.
In most cases, a three-stage base will also have a lower than standard desk height starting point.
